Can you fly with a power station? The FAA's watt-hour lines, and what they mean for every unit on this site
The FAA's three watt-hour tiers for lithium batteries, why almost no power station clears them, the airline-approval band, and what a CPAP traveler packs.
The short answer is no for almost every unit on this site, and the reason is a number the FAA publishes rather than any airline’s preference. Lithium-ion batteries up to 100 Wh fly freely in carry-on; 101 to 160 Wh fly with the airline’s approval; above 160 Wh they do not fly at all. A “small” 245 Wh power station is more than half again over the top line. Here is the rule as the FAA states it, what it does to each class, and what a traveler who needs power on the plane actually carries.
The FAA’s three tiers
From the FAA’s PackSafe guidance for airline passengers:

Two details matter. “Spare” includes power banks and any battery not installed in equipment, which is what a power station is. And the airline’s rules can be tighter than the FAA’s floor, never looser, so the 101 to 160 Wh band is a phone call, not a right.
Where the units on this site fall
Nowhere useful. The smallest units ranked here, the EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus at 286 Wh and the Anker SOLIX C300 at 288 Wh on the CPAP page, are nearly double the forbidden line. Everything on the 1 kWh roundup and above is six to forty times it. There is no packaging, no discharge state and no paperwork that changes this; the limit is on the cell capacity, and 160 Wh is the ceiling.
Jackery’s product listings include a 99 Wh Explorer 100 Plus, which is the size of unit built to the rule, and the reason it exists. It is also the size of a large power bank: 20,000 mAh at 3.7 V is 74 Wh, per the conversion in the watt-hours guide, and a 27,000 mAh bank is right at 100 Wh. That is the class that travels.
The CPAP traveler
This is the reader the rule bites hardest, because a night of humidified CPAP is about 424 Wh at ResMed’s typical 53 W figure, and no legal carry-on battery holds that. What travelers do instead:
- Turn off the humidifier and heated tube. ResMed does not publish the humidifier-off draw, but it is a fraction of 53 W, and a 100 to 160 Wh CPAP battery is built around that case.
- Use a CPAP-specific battery under 160 Wh, with the airline’s approval obtained before the flight, and the machine’s own DC cable rather than an inverter. The CPAP page explains why DC-direct matters.
- Tell the equipment provider the plan. Power math is this site’s job; whether a humidifier-off night is acceptable for a particular prescription is theirs.
Shipping instead of flying
A power station for the destination can travel by ground: the makers ship them, and a 2 kWh unit bought at the destination or shipped ahead is the normal answer for a long stay. Airlines and the FAA regulate what goes on the aircraft, not what a courier drives.
Why the rule is where it is
Lithium-ion cells can enter thermal runaway when damaged or shorted, and a fire in a cargo hold cannot be fought. The 100 and 160 Wh lines are the FAA’s judgment of what a cabin crew can handle with a fire containment bag. That is also why the UL standards guide exists: the same chemistry that makes these units useful is the reason the listings matter.
