LiFePO4 vs NMC power stations: what the chemistry changes, in the makers' own numbers
Cycle life, weight, cold behaviour and what a cycle rating actually promises, compared on two Jackery units that differ mainly in chemistry.
Every power station sold for home backup since about 2023 is built on lithium iron phosphate, and the ones sold before it were mostly not. The difference is real but it is not the one the marketing implies, and the cleanest way to see it is a maker that sells both: Jackery’s original Explorer 1000 and its Explorer 1000 v2 are near-identical products separated mainly by the cells inside.
Two units, one maker, one number changed

Five times the cycles for an extra two pounds, at similar capacity. That is the trade in one row, and it is why the entire category switched. It also shows the fine print this site prints on every card: the two ratings are not to the same basis, 80% for the old unit and 70% for the new, so the honest comparison is “many times more cycles,” not “five times.”
What the chemistry actually changes
Cycle life. Iron phosphate cells tolerate full charges and deep discharges far better than nickel-cobalt cells. Makers rate LFP power stations at 3,000 to 6,000 cycles: EcoFlow at 3,000 or 4,000 to 80% depending on the model, Anker at 4,000 to 80%, Bluetti at 6,000 to 80% on its newest units. NMC units were rated at 500 to 800. Weight. NMC stores more energy per pound. On the two Jackerys the gap is two pounds; across the market an LFP unit is typically 10 to 20% heavier for the same capacity. That is the price of the cycle life, and for a unit that is carried to a campsite it is a real one.
Heat tolerance. Iron phosphate cells are harder to push into thermal runaway than NMC cells, which is a large part of why makers adopted them for products that sit in closets and basements. It is a property of the cell chemistry, and it is not the same as a safety certification; the UL listings this site prints on every card are earned by the finished product, not by the chemistry.
Cold. Both chemistries lose usable capacity in the cold and neither should be charged below freezing; most units refuse to. Every maker’s capacity rating is at room temperature. How to read the spec sheet
Three lines settle most of it. The chemistry line should say LiFePO4 or LFP; “lithium-ion” without a qualifier means it is probably not. The cycle rating should state a basis, “to 80% capacity”; a bare “3,000+ cycles” is a number without a promise, and on our cards it reads as not stated rather than being rounded up. And the certification line should name a listing, UL 2743 for portable units or UL 9540 for home systems, because the chemistry does not confer one. What does not change
The runtime math. A watt-hour is a watt-hour, the inverter loses the same 15% turning it into AC, and the surge question depends on the inverter, not the cells. Chemistry decides how many years the unit lasts and how much it weighs; it does not decide whether it starts your pump.

Is LiFePO4 better than NMC for a power station?
For a unit that sits charged for months and is cycled hundreds of times, yes: makers rate LFP packs at three to six thousand cycles against several hundred for NMC. NMC stores more energy per pound, which matters for a unit carried daily and not much for one that lives in a basement.
What does a cycle rating mean?
The number of full charge-discharge cycles after which the pack still holds a stated fraction of its original capacity. The fraction matters: Jackery rates its LFP units to 70%, most makers to 80%, and some state no basis at all. Compare the basis before comparing the number.
Is a lithium-ion power station the same as NMC?
Usually. Makers write "lithium-ion" on units built from nickel manganese cobalt or similar cells, and "LiFePO4" or "LFP" when they use lithium iron phosphate, which is also a lithium-ion chemistry. If the spec sheet does not say LiFePO4 or LFP, assume it is not.
Are LiFePO4 power stations safer?
Iron phosphate cells tolerate heat and abuse better than NMC cells, which is why makers moved to them for home backup. That is a property of the cell, not a safety listing. Look for UL 2743 or UL 9540 on the unit itself; the chemistry alone is not a certification.
